The aim of the Barwon South West Homelessness Network is to improve outcomes in the region for adults and children who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness through cooperation between regional homelessness assistance services, and through consultation between such services, their clients, decision-makers and other relevant services.

The Barwon South West Homelessness Network (BSWHN) is one of eight regional networks across Victoria funded to bring services together to share information, identify common needs and gaps in service provision, and establish close working relationships to promote and assist the best possible response to homelessness within a regional context.

Core members of the Network are homelessness and family violence agencies receiving funding from the Homelessness Assistance Support Program.

The BSW Homelessness Network Coordinator is employed to manage the Network activities across the region. This position is auspiced by Colac Area Health. A steering group consisting of representatives from local homelessness and family violence services, the auspice and Department of Human Services Barwon South West Region, informs the general direction of the Network.

The Network's objectives include:
  • Consultation - Facilitate consultation with primary regional homelessness assistance providers, service users, the Department of Human Services and other decision makers.
  • Co-ordination and Linkages - Maintain and develop linkages within the homelessness services system with other relevant service providers and with peak bodies, both at a regional and state level.
  • Needs Identification, Planning and Service Development - Assist in the identification of regional needs and contribute to policy analysis, research, and program and service development with a view to enhancing the regional and statewide homelessness service system.
  • Community Education/Advocacy - Share information and promote a better understanding of homelessness with a range of government and community organisations.
  • Training - Contribute to the development of training priorities within the regional homelessness network, and promote participation within and outside services as appropriate.
  • Best Practice - Share information and opportunity equally with all workers in the regional homelessness network in pursuit of best practice in service delivery.
